Second Harvest signature soups will help fight child hunger on Wednesday at Capitol

Did you know one in six people in the Big Bend struggles with hunger?
And one in four who struggle are children.
It’s that time of year again where residents can join America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend at its Annual Bowls of Hope presented by Walmart. The event will take place at the Florida State Capitol Courtyard on Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Even in this time of economic recession, our community is rich in resources and no person should face hunger,” said Paul Clements, development director of Second Harvest of the Big Bend. “No child should go to bed hungry.”
People can learn more about the fight against child hunger while enjoying signature soup samples from more than a dozen local restaurants.
Admission is free this year and open to the public.
Everyone’s assistance is needed to help provide children in the Big Bend struggling with hunger a backpack full of food over the weekend throughout the school year.
Second Harvest is requesting a contribution of $15 donation to this program. This will provide a backpack for an entire month to one child.
The purpose of the Backpack for Kids program is to provide children at-risk of having no food, or not enough to eat, a bag of food to take home every weekend during the school year.
These children are guaranteed a free breakfast and lunch during the school week, but no such guarantee exists during the weekends. These children are returning to school sick and unable to learn because they had not eaten since their school lunch the previous Friday.
Second Harvest is currently partnering with four schools providing 350 children each weekend a brown grocery bag full of food. This is enough food to feed an entire family of four. These bags contain usually two full meals, breakfasts, snacks and beverages.
In addition, last fall the agency started including fresh produce donated by local farmers when available to provide healthier options.
“Everyone can get involved in the fight agains hunger,” said Clements. “Some choose to donate their time, money or food. Others choose to advocate on a local, state or national level.”
